The Refugees are a group of seasoned musicians who love the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and do our best to recreate the great songs they have performed over the years. If the Heartbreakers aren't on tour, we're the next best thing!
Jody has been playing the guitar since jr. high, and the piano since before he can even remember. He started on his mom's old guitar that she had once learned on, then moved on to a bright red Fender Strat, learning tunes like the Ventures' Walk Don't Run, and Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode.
Almost 20 years later, he realized that some of the most fun he had with a guitar was playing Tom Petty's music. Already knowing all the music, he decided to form a Tom Petty tribute band. A guitar player at heart, he's still not quite sure how he became the lead singer, but it made him laugh when he read something similar about Petty - that he felt he was singing temporarily at first until they could find a real singer! Petty's songs, although seemingly simplistic on the surface, always impressed Jody with their underlying detail and complexity. His goal is to one day write a few songs on par with some of Petty's.
When his guitars are in their cases, Jody spends his time playing ice hockey, or earning money as an electrical engineer to buy more music gear.
